snowboarding.
Following are ten tips all skiiers should
know:
| 1 |
Stretch
before you ride - always stretch
all major muscles before hitting the slopes.
The consequence of tight muscles is an injury
that could very easily put you on the sidelines
for the rest of your holiday |
| 2 |
Try before
you buy - Never buy equipment just
because it looks good. Standard procedure
at most ski shops is to hire out equipment
in the hope you will then buy it. |
| 3 |
Take lessons
- you will learn what to do, and
get advice, instead of continuously looking
the fool. Consider learning on a dry-ski slope
before hand and improve your fitness before
you go on holiday. Improved fitness will mean
you will enjoy your holiday more. |
| 4 |
Drink Water
- When you combine exercise, dehydration
and high altitude, you run the risk of serious
nausea and altitude sickness. Drink plenty
of water at all times, and leave the booze
until after you prop your board up for the
day. |
| 5 |
Respect
marked runs - these runs are protected
from alpine dangers. Keep within the marked
runs as these are patrolled and groomed |
| 6 |
Be aware
of your surroundings - watch out
for piste preparation machines and anything
else which might get in your way. You must
always give priority to those below you on
the slope. |
| 7 |
Respect
Nature - of course, don't drop litter,
and don't ski in areas where there are young
trees or where wildlife will be disturbed.
|
| 8 |
Give the
boarders a break - skiers vs snowboarders
is old hat. Don't go out of your way to be
rude, or you'll end up looking stupid. |
| 9 |
Get out
of the way when you get off the lift
to buckle up. Protocol dictates that you move
to the far sides of the run before buckling
up. |
| 10 |
If you
going off-piste - these areas are
not groomed or patrolled. The golden rules
are: |
|
|
Signs around the ski area will
warn you when avalanche danger is present
|
|
|
Even if there are no avalanche
warnings, there could still be local snow
slides |
|
|
Always ski with someone else,
preferably a guide who knows the area well.
(in the USA, skiing and boarding "out
of bounds" without a guide can lead to confiscation
of your lift pass) |
|
|
If in doubt, never ski or board
away from the marked runs. |
